Exclusive Preview of Porch Light Apothecary's New Album

On October 14, Americana rockers Porch Light Apothecary will release their first studio album, Silence to Sound.  Luckily for you fine folks, we have an exclusive preview of the album one week before its official release. Check it out here on Soundcloud.

Silence to Sound includes eight songs written by front man Brent Jordan, who had a past solo album featured on NBC’s hit television show Scrubs. In Silence to Sound, he writes about the joys and pains of real life while casting raw emotion in his songs. “The songs just seem to appear every now and then, out of nowhere,” said Brent.  He almost doesn't feel ownership of the songs he writes. It’s something deeper and spiritual. “They're gifts given to me that I have to share.”  He so eloquently tells a story with song.

Arguably one of the most memorable songs from the album, “Good to Be in Carolina Again” has been selected by the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes for use in their upcoming Home Grown Series ads this season.

Silence to Sound was recorded at Sleepy Cat Recordings in Carrboro. On the recording process, drummer and mandolin player Jason Elliott (JJ) states, “We couldn't have asked for a better place than Carrboro to get away for a few days and pour our hearts into creating this album without any distractions.  It’s such a relaxed, creative community, and Saman and Dylan were fantastic to work with.  It was a truly magical experience.”

Porch Light Apothecary's musical collaboration is sure to stir something inside of you; drawing you in from different roads of life, calling you up to the music being played by the front porch lights, taking you on an intimate journey of discovery.

My Brother, My Sister Returns to Play Deep South

Deep South the Bar is known for bringing in great local acts on any given night and this Thursday night promises to uphold that reputation.  Most recently you might have caught My Brother, My Sister opening for Matrimony at Lincoln Theatre, but this time around the Raleigh based folk-punk rock group is joining two other NC based bands for a special night of music.  As indicated in the title, the brother sister combo of John and Anne Tomasevich create a delightful sound with the assistance of Jon Sebastian on the drums and Jason Rehm on the bass.  Check out My Brother, My Sister's self titled album by visiting their website prior to Thursday's show.

In addition to My Brother, My Sister, Aim North, also out of Raleigh, will be featured at Deep South.  Aim North may look very similar to another local band, Jack the Radio, as band members Chris Sayles, George Hage, and Danny Johnson have joined together with Chris' younger brother Jamison to create a unique Americana band that is quickly catching the attention of local music fans throughout the triangle.  In less than a year, Aim North has already released an EP titled, Chasing Birds, and featured in a video spotlight by the popular local Raleigh news source, Indyweek.  

Rounding out the lineup, Roseland from Greensboro, NC is also an Americana band that has been heavily influenced by classic rock and country music artists of recent years.  Roseland released their own self-titled album in September of 2013 and have been featured at several major venues throughout North Carolina over the past year.  Be sure to make it over to Deep South the Bar this Thursday to catch some of North Carolina's best musicians at work! Smooth Hound Smith Makes Raleigh Debut

We all have guilty pleasures, possibly chocolate, romance novels, or fast food. Personally, I'm guilty of loving mindless, pointless reality TV.  As I lazily sat and absorbed an intense love triangle explosion on MTV's Real World, the most beautiful music traveled to my ears. It was a lovely male and female harmony supported by the soft strum of the guitar. Thankfully, even though MTV rarely plays music videos these days, they do post the song titles and artists featured on each show.  This is when I discovered my latest musical obsession, Smooth Hound Smith.

Caitlin Doyle and Zack Smith met in LA and established Smooth Hound Smith in 2012.  After releasing their self-titled debut album in 2013, they've since settled in Nashville, but have spent nearly seven months of the last two years touring.  Zack started out as a one man band, but he quickly realized how much Caitlin added to the music, "She has such a rare and valuable skill set; she conceptualized a great deal of the harmonies, and we did the arrangements together."


Smooth Hound Smith is one of those bands that's difficult to describe due to their wide array of sounds.  The softer songs such as "Crazy Over You" and "California Sway" carry a  romantic rhythm supported by the gentle picking of the guitar matched with lyric-driven harmonies.  In the more bluesy-rock songs, "30 Days" and "Blue Dress", the foot percussion, harmonica, and grungy guitar induce instant foot stomping. 

The Triangle Beat is pleased to introduce Smooth Hound Smith to Raleigh this Friday at Deep South.  A  night of Americana-Folk is planned with Rob Nance and The Midatlantic also performing.  Join us for our first official show presentation and memorable night of music with friends for a mere $7.  The doors open at 7 and the fun begins at 9.

Saints Apollo Plays at Deep South

A local favorite, Saints Apollo, will play on the Deep South stage this Saturday, August 30.  This harmonious band will be joined by The Roman Spring, Dark Water Rising, and Ryan K. Hamlin for a stellar lineup. 

Since the band developed in 2011, they have played all over the Triangle, including the noteworthy Hopscotch Festival.  Saints Apollo mixes indie and folk sounds with the angelic harmonies of Jonathan Koo, violinist Autumn Brand,  cello player Kaitlin Grady, drummer Andrew Fetch, and Rachel Broadbent on the keys.
 
During a Saints Apollo show,  one can expect to experience an array of emotions.  Upbeat songs like "Hashin it Out" and "Ain't Lyin" are sure to induce dancing, while more serious tunes such as "This Lie" and "Warning Signs" discuss relationship woes that most people have suffered through at some point.  The variety provided ensures that every soul will be able to connect with this raw local talent.

Leeward Fate Plays at Deep South Bar

Home is a relative term for the members of Leeward Fate.  Each of the three members calls a different state home, but Raleigh is considered the gathering place for the band.  This is where they connect regularly to practice for shows and record new music.

Most recently, they gathered to record their third LP, No Ordinary Kind. In this latest LP, the band meshes sounds from blues, rock, pop and funk to create their own original sound.  Since the band formed in 2008 on the Leeward Islands in Saint Kitts, they have released three LP's and one EP, sharing their music on the East and West coasts.  Along the way, they gain new devoted fans that enjoy their energetic and thoughtful performances.

Daniel Nickels, Richard McCorkell, and Tom Miller return to Raleigh this Friday at the Deep South Bar with support from Mirror 7 and Flimsy.  The doors open at 7 and the fun begins at 9.
